Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy, and meaningful connections through aquatics, fitness, tennis, and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts. PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE
As a Swim School Instructor, you will help young swimmers build confidence, develop lifelong water safety skills, and discover a love of the water in a fun, supportive environment. Using PCC's Swim School curriculum, you will teach small-group lessons (2:1 ratio) that are tailored to each swimmer's needs while creating a positive experience for both swimmers and their families.

PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Swim School Instructor is part of a collaborative and supportive aquatics team, reporting to the On Deck Supervisor and working closely with the Aquatics Coordinator, Programs Director, and fellow instructors. Instructors build positive relationships with swimmers, families, and PCC members while creating a fun, welcoming environment where every swimmer can succeed. Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided.

WORKWEEK
  • Commit to a consistent weekend schedule throughout the fall to provide continuity for swimmers and their families.
  • Typical schedule of 3-8 hours per week on weekends, based on assigned classes.
  • Attend all required trainings and team meetings.
  • Seasonal position running August through October, with training beginning prior to the start of the season.
SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach fun, engaging swim lessons that help young swimmers build confidence, water safety skills, and a love of swimming.
  • Adapt instruction to meet each swimmer's age, ability, and learning style while following the PCC Swim School curriculum.
  • Build positive relationships with swimmers and families by providing encouragement, feedback, and progress updates.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming pool environment by following all facility policies, safety procedures, and the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Arrive prepared and ready to teach every lesson.
  • Communicate schedule changes promptly, assist with lesson coverage when possible, and work collaboratively with the aquatics team.
  • Represent PCC with professionalism, positivity, and a team-first attitude while helping create an outstanding experience for members and guests.
  • Support other duties that contribute to the success of the aquatics department and PCC's mission.
PROFILE SKILLS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
  • Passion for teaching young swimmers and helping them build confidence in the water.
  • Positive, dependable teammate who creates a fun, encouraging learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to safety.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
  • American Red Cross Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required.
  • Must be at least 15 years old with strong swimming skills.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Prior swim instruction or coaching experience is preferred, but not required. Comprehensive training is provided.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be in the water and sun for extended periods.
  • Must be able to hold children (ages 3-12) in the water, stand in the water, swim 300 yards continuously (breaststroke or freestyle), and tread water for two minutes without using arms.
  • Must be able to perform all American Red Cross CPR skills. 
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.
  • DOJ background clearance required.
  • Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies.

Compensation: $21.50 - $25.00 per hour
